Finding the door

Half in Murcia: how to give an address in El Mojón

The boundary between two regions runs through the middle of El Mojón, and some of its streets belong to two different town halls. How to say where you are so that help finds the right door.

· 4 min read

El Mojón is the southern end of Torre de la Horadada, and also the southern end of the whole Comunitat Valenciana. A mojón is a boundary stone, and the name is literal: the line between the Valencian province of Alicante and the Region of Murcia runs straight through the middle of the place. On one side the town hall is Pilar de la Horadada; on the other it is San Pedro del Pinatar.

Most days that makes no difference to anyone. It starts to matter when you need someone to find you quickly.

Why the address gets confused

  • The same street can carry two municipalities. Some streets in El Mojón have houses that belong to Pilar on one side and San Pedro on the other.
  • Map apps guess. Type the street name alone and the app may pick the Murcia side, or the Alicante side, depending on how the address was entered.
  • Postcodes do not help much on their own. Pilar de la Horadada has three postcodes (03190, 03191 and 03192), and the Murcia side has its own. A wrong postcode sends a driver to the wrong end.

Words that get a van to the right house

When you ring or message, give these, in this order:

  1. “El Mojón, Pilar side” or “El Mojón, San Pedro side”, if you know it. If you do not, say so; that is useful too.
  2. The street name as written on the sign, and the number or the name of the block.
  3. Something a driver can see: the beach, a restaurant on the corner, the colour of the gate.
  4. A pin from your phone. On WhatsApp, the attachment button has a “Location” option. That ends all doubt.

Is your side covered?

This business covers the whole municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, El Mojón included, up to the line. San Pedro del Pinatar, on the other side, is not part of its area. If you are not sure which side your house is on, send the pin and you will get a straight answer before anyone sets off.

The rest of the coast has its own quirks: the bed of the Río Seco separates La Torre from Mil Palmeras, and inland the countryside houses go by family names rather than numbers. How to read the place names and the three postcodes, and every part of the municipality we cover.

In summer

In July and August El Mojón has a market on Tuesday mornings, and La Torre has its big Wednesday evening market. Streets fill up. If you need help on one of those days, name a corner a van can actually reach. More on calling during a summer market.
