# Safe opening Pilar de la Horadada, for keypads that stayed dark

Most of the safes we are called to are small electronic ones in a wardrobe: one that went dark while the house was shut, one whose code left with the last owner, one a guest locked and forgot. Most open without harm, and a new safe, where you want one, is bolted into concrete.

- Batteries and override first
- Proof of ownership
- Price agreed before any work

**Two checks first:** change the batteries, through the outside terminals if the safe has them, and look round the keypad and under the maker’s plate for a hidden override lock. Plenty of safes that seem broken simply have no power.

## Three ways in, gentlest first

1. **Wake it up**

A fresh battery through the outside terminals, the override key if there is one, or the maker’s reset procedure for that model.
2. **Read the lock**

A dial or an electronic lock can often be worked from the front, leaving the steel box itself intact.
3. **Drill once, only with your yes**

If neither works, one small hole is made in the right place, the lock is replaced, and the safe goes back into use.

Before anything is opened you show that it is yours: purchase deeds, a rental agreement that includes the safe, or the owner confirming by phone.

## Safes in the homes of this municipality

**Resale villas.** Pinar de Campoverde has been built since the mid-1980s, and a house that passes from one owner to the next can keep its safe and lose its code on the way. [What to do when the safe came with the house](https://locksmithpilardelahoradada.es/blog/the-safe-that-came-with-the-house/).

**New flats.** Pilar de la Horadada started more new homes than anywhere else in the Vega Baja in the first nine months of 2021, and a new home is the easiest moment to fit a safe properly, before the wardrobes are full. [Everything else a new home needs](https://locksmithpilardelahoradada.es/new-build-locksmith-pilar-de-la-horadada/).

**Homes left for weeks.** A safe bolted into a concrete floor is worth more than a heavier one standing loose. If the house has been broken into, start with [the break-in page](https://locksmithpilardelahoradada.es/burglary-repair-pilar-de-la-horadada/); for the doors themselves, [lock changes](https://locksmithpilardelahoradada.es/lock-change-pilar-de-la-horadada/).

## Wardrobe safes, keypads and lost codes

### The keypad lights up but the door will not open. Is the safe broken?

Often not. A keypad can have enough power to light up and not enough to pull the bolt. Fresh batteries first, through the outside contacts if the safe has them.

### Where is the override key usually hidden on a small safe?

Behind the maker’s badge or a small cover under the keypad. If the key itself is inside the safe, or lost, the safe can still be opened.

### We bought the house with a safe in the wardrobe and no code. What do you need?

The deeds or the purchase contract, and a photo of the front of the safe and its label. Once it is open you set your own code.

### Can a new safe be fitted in a new-build flat without damaging anything?

Yes, as long as there is a solid floor or wall to bolt into. Hollow partitions are no good; a wardrobe floor over concrete usually is.

## A photo of the safe is the best first message

The front, the keypad or dial and the maker’s label tell us how it is likely to open.
